Vine was an app in which creators could film six second looped videos, usually centered around comedy, and post them. There were also sub-communities of video editors and musicians. Regardless of the content, people could leave comments or revine the video onto their own profile. The app was officially shut down in January of 2017, causing much disappointment to enthusiastic users.

Many social media users who rose to fame through the app expressed dismay when it shut down, but moved onto other platforms such as Instagram, Instagram, or YouTube. Many compilations full of “iconic vines” were posted online in remembrance of the app and it’s users, and it seemed the majority of the Internet was deeply upset by the so called “death of Vine.”

However, there may be an upcoming revival to the viral app– co-creator of the original Vine app, Dom Hofmann, has made several posts on Twitter hinting at a supposed “V2,” a follow up app to Vine. Though it is not his top priority, he revealed that it was something he had been wanting to do for some time, and that he had received various messages and comments about it.

In the posts, he said that “I’m funding it myself as an outside project… nothing else to share yet, but more as it develops.”

Many users are extremely excited about this, both old creators and old followers. Though some fear that the new version of the app will fail like the first model, many are optimistic and plan to return to the platform when it’s released.

Vine was a place where it was simple to make content and easily accessible to every user. With a new version of the app, the hope is that these opportunities will come again and allow new creators to gain fame and acknowledgement for their content.
